Once raiding is fully underway, it becomes necessary to preserve fairness with loot. Some questions should come to mind:
- How does one prevent raid ninjas?
- How can loot be divided fairly so that no one person gets everything?
- How do you reward active raiders who show up every week while allowing newer players to get in on the action?
A loot system is designed to solve these issues and the system we will be using is called EPGP or "Effort Points Gear Points."
The system is simple despite being able to solve many loot issues. All raiders (and for that matter all guild members) have three numbers associated with them: Effort Points, Gear Points, and a Priority Ratio (PR).
EP = Think of this as an indication of the 'effort' you put into raiding. Showing up on time, downing bosses, and just raiding are some ways among others to raise your EPs. EPs are always good and getting more means you will be more likely to get the items you want.
GP = This is a generic value representing all the 'gear' you've recieved raiding. You don't earn these points. Rather, when you 'win' an item your GPs automatically rise. While in theory you want this number low, having it low means you've won few items, if any.
PR = This is the magic number that makes it all work. PR is literally your EP divided by your GP. The resulting number gives you a rank that fluxuates over time. Higher PR means you get the loot!
So whay do all these numbers mean to you guys? Example time!
Say you raided a lot. Accordingly you've earned a sizable 1000 EPs and haven't had any of your gear drop. Then Joe the douche desides to raid one night after missing the last few raids. Both of you have recieved equal amounts of gear so far but suddenly your item drops and he wants it too!
However, Joe only has 200 EPs. Since you both have been getting gear equally (say both have only 200 GPs), doing the math gives him a PR of 1. However, you have a PR of 5! You win the 'roll'.
Now what if that item was worth 200 GPs? Joe's PR hasn't changed so its still 1. But yours is now 1000 EPs/400 GPs or 2.5, still better than Joe but you can see that eventually Joe will get his shot (quicker if he starts showing up on time going forward).
Now what about your friend who had the same stats as you? Since he didn't want that item his PR is still 1000 EPs/ 200 GPs or 5. Next item that drops, he gets priority on :-)
As you can see its a system that favors those who put the effort in without allowing those same people to hoard ALL the loot.
Any questions just let me know :-)
